Super lucky

So despite not being sold on her at all I pulled for Linnea after patching the game today. My only goal was to get Illuga to C6 (I already had him at C3) and I would have been willing to roll on Chasca's banner too to avoid getting Linnea cons. I started with 53 pity... and got Linnea in my first ten-pull. What? Not only was it another 50/50 won but also an early 5 star! I was shocked. And slightly bemused, because why do I win my 50/50 on characters I actually can't stand?!

With only one Illuga con in that ten-pull I then really went over to the Chasca banner. 30 more pulls and I got Illuga's last two cons. Woohoo! That was a seriously lucky pulling session, something I'm not used to at all.

Now I own Linnea, who I hate with a passion, she's just so annoying. However, she'll make my Zibai stronger and will make sure she stays competitive a bit longer despite me not owning Columbina.

It won't help me with the upcoming Lunar Bloom shilling, but I still hope someone will come up with a cheat to bypass that stupid mechanic.

Now I'll just have to level Linnea, which will take a while since her world boss is at the far end of the new zone and probably requires you to do the world quest first. Which I won't be able to do yet, because I'm still at my parents' house and don't want to play main quests on my tablet. So I'll only be able to start tomorrow after work, because when we get home tonight Millicent will need lots of attention since we've been gone for so long.

I'm a bit worried about the 6.6 banners though. I want both Lohen and Nicole, but now there's also the chance that they're going to run an Inazuma Chronicled banner as the leaks talk about an Inazuma story event. On the one hand, it would be amazing as it would allow me to finally get Chiori to C6, but on the other, it would require serious whaling and, unless I'm insanely lucky, which is unlikely, I'd have to skip either Lohen or Nicole, maybe even both. I'm definitely willing to swipe for Chiori, but obviously there are limits.

But then again, I don't think they’ll really give us an Inazuma Chronicled when it would be Liyue's turn first and there's also the silly stuff about Chinsese companies cancelling everything to do with Japan to consider. I'd really hope for a Chiori rerun though, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. We'll know in a month.

In the afternoon, we're returning home. While I'm looking forward to being with Millicent again, I'm so not looking forward to return to work tomorrow. Especially since the husband has the rest of the week off. QQ Oh well...

He's perfect

Still with my parents for another day. Last night I got a voice message from the cat sitter. At first I was a bit annoyed because I really dislike voice messages and don't understand why the messaging apps won't let you disable the receipt of them, but when I then listened to it I was shocked. The poor sitter got stuck in the elevator in our building after he was done feeding Millicent! I felt so sorry for him. Of course he immediately pressed that emergency button that connects you with the elevator company, but it still took them two hours to get there and free him (I'm sure it didn't help that yesterday was a public holiday, but still...). I would have gone crazy in there, I'm not joking. Apparently there's something seriously wrong with the lift and it's going to take a while to get it fixed, but I don't think I'll use it anytime soon. I'm mostly walking up the stairs to get to our flat anyway, but now I won't even use it after shopping. The husband says he's not scared - well, then he's very welcome to take the shopping upstairs in it while I walk.

The cat sitter didn't seem to worried about the whole thing, but I still think we should get him a little something to say sorry. It's not our fault, but still. Wasting two hours on a holiday when you just wanted to go look after the cat you're sitting is super annoying. At least Millicent is finally not scared of him anymore. In the videos he sends is every day she now allows him to pet her. After she hissed at him last Friday I was seriously worried that she would never warm up on him. He is a bit weird, that's true, but Millicent shouldn't really care about that. ;)

I'm still having a good time in my hometown though. Yesterday I met a friend in the afternoon and today is going to be another sunny day, it seems. There won't be time to go to the zoo like we had planned since my mum has an appointment in the afternoon, but we can at least go for a walk again.

I'm also playing a lot of Genshin. I'm still grinding talent books for several characters. I already got enough to crown Zibai, Xiao, and to level a few other characters' talents, but I'm too stingy and don't want to spend any Mora right now when I know that levelling Linnea tomorrow will cost a lot. I should just suck it up, I do have enough Mora after all, but I just have such a hard time spending money, be it in real life or in games. oTL

I also keep thinking how good of a character Durin is. Hoyo did amazing with him. He has an interesting and multi-faceted personality, he's embedded in the story, and he gets to interact with so many different characters. Which is exceedingly rare. Just look at the waifus and the designated shipping bait. To avoid offending the crazies Hoyo will keep the characters they want to have shipped (either with the waifu crowd or the yuri/yaoi fanatics) away from others, lest the target audience throws a fit. That's the biggest downside of gachas and modern games in general. By focusing on the shippers characterisation suffers. I've become super anti-shippers because of this. Imagine being jealous of pixels or needing a ship to be canon to be able to enjoy it... /eyeroll

So it's really refreshing to see how different Durin is in that regard. And he's just such a sweety. I'm really looking forward to writing again. <3

It's shocking

Yesterday I had enough and changed the voiceover in Neo:TWEWY to Japanese. I just couldn't stand Nagi's annoyed grunts in cutscenes and Fret's dumb comments during combat anymore. And wow, what a change! The characters are completely different in Japanese. I have honestly never seen such a botched localisation before. Sure, even in Japanese the characters talk very casually, but it's nothing compared to what the localisers did to them in English. It's a bizarre experience hearing the Japanese voices and then reading the English translation during the cutscenes, because it's just so different. I also don't mind any of the characters in Japanese at all, while I find them all insufferable in English.

Honestly, localisers shouldn't get away with something like that. They take a character like Shoka and have her address the group with "Hey losers" in English, when she isn't rude to them at all in Japanese. You have all the shop clerks say "いらっしゃいませ" and "Thank you", and in English you have one guy suddenly go "Fight the power". Or Beat suddenly calling the police "pigs" when that idiotic "ACAB" stuff is very American (though some too-online people in the West have copied it too). It's honestly very disrespectful to the original.

I think going forward I'll just have to be less lazy and play games in Japanese. Or even just French (but never German, NEVER!), because English localisations have become so much worse than in the past. I think that when I finally play Dawntrail, I'll also switch over to Japanese, even though that's going to be weird after playing in English for so many years.

I did finish Week 2 Day 4 though, which was my goal before going away for a few days today. I wouldn't say I'm very invested in the story, but I'm definitely having fun. I'm still fairly sure I'll have to eventually lower the difficulty to Easy but for now I'm fighting on. Looking forward to picking the game back up when I'm home again next Thursday.

Though by then the new Genshin patch will be out. I guess TWEWY will have to wait a bit longer...

I'm sure someone much better at using R to make beautiful figures would have figured out how to create an oncoplot easily, even when the data is not in a MAF or VCF format (it's CSV).

Anyway, thanks to the combined power of ggplot2 and patchwork, I was able to create what my collaborator wanted for the paper he's writing on this data, and so in case I ever forget it and in case it's ever useful for anyone, here are some links that I've referenced:

  • ggplot2 to make heatmaps: I used this to make (1) heatmaps for the genes; (2) heatmap for ethnicity, age category, smoking history, etc. all separately

  • patchwork to combine plots: Then I combined them all, collected all the legend to the side and done! This was a pretty useful guide as well.

For data prep, I arranged the data by the order of frequency of the gene mutation (highest to lowest), gave all the sample a new ID based on this order and used that new ID for the x-axis for all the figures I made so that they correspond to each other.

Using patchwork, I made it so that the figures for ethnicity, age category, etc. were a lot thinner in terms of width compared to the gene plot. I didn't make a stacked bar chart as shown in the oncoplot example because it was already represented by another figure elsewhere, but if I had wanted to do it, it shouldn't be hard using these two packages.

I don't know why I spent two days trying to wrangle other packages specifically for oncoplots when this solution just took me half an hour, tops. But I guess one has to go through all that pain before deciding to ditch those solutions and go with what's already familiar and known to me (that is, ggplot2).
